KANSAS CITY AREA CENTRAL OFFICE OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS

The Kansas City Area Central Office was created in 1970 to aid the AA groups in the purpose of carrying the message to the sick alcoholic.  It is an AA Service Office and acts as a clearing house for all groups.  We serve about 20 to 25 counties in Kansas and Missouri, consisting of over 150 groups, holding over 1200 meetings per week.  Any AA group in this area is welcome to use our services.  We hope you will!

Our primary purpose is to help the alcoholic that still suffers and see that his or her call is given to the group nearest their address, regardless of where it might be.

We give information on AA to non AA's, and to outside groups, to business firms, or anyone that requests it.  We furnish speakers for schools, churches, organizations, etc., to anyone seeking information to better reach the alcoholic or their families.  We help new groups get started, And try to help all groups if any are having problems.  We take calls for Al-Anon and Ala-teen, and refer them to their nearest group, or the Al-Anon Information  Office.

We answer all mail, and mail information to anyone requesting it.  We accept calls that AA groups feel they shouldn't handle, and we direct these calls to the agency that can offer the best help.  We have an after hours pager service, with a recovering alcoholic available to answer questions and talk to anyone who requires it.  We publish a newsletter and bulletin each month to show what goes on in the office and AA activities in the groups in our area, including nearby states.

We sell books and literature.  Price list available.  We publish a complete AA Group Directory, giving the name, location, type, and time of meetings for all groups in the area.

We cooperate with all other community agencies who deal with the alcoholic, yet we always strive to stay within the guidelines of AA.  We are contacted by clergymen, lawyers, doctors, nurses, teachers, counselors, employers, hospitals, various social agencies, law enforcement officials, and many people interested in the alcoholic, who want to know what AA can do to help the alcoholic.

We do our best to work with all Groups and the AA Service Structure Committees and Group Servants to help the alcoholic and try to help bring all groups a little closer together.

Some goals we'd like to accomplish in the near future:

  1. Establish a prudent reserve for Central Office.

  2. Sponsor workshops on 12 Stepping & Sponsorship & Service Work.

The Central Office (Intergroup) is supported by voluntary contributions from groups, by funds derived from literature sales, and by individual members only.

The office is staffed by two full-time people. There is always a need for volunteer workers. Feel free to stop by and spend time with us and experience the magic!

WHO RUNS CENTRAL OFFICE?

Each group elects a representative to be a Delegate to the Central Office (intergroup).  Usually a two year term.  The Kansas City Central Office holds its delegate meetings the second Sunday of each month.  The meeting place travels to different group locations, voluntarily invited by the group delegate.

Delegates to Central Office serve as a link between the local groups and functions of the office by:

  1. reporting the group happenings.

  2. sharing the group problems/or solutions

  3. developing support for each other to keep the fellowship communications going

  4. coordinating with each other and area service committees to help the still suffering alcoholic.

WHAT IS A CENTRAL OFFICE

A Central Office (or intergroup) is an A.A. service office that involves partnership among groups in a community - just as A.A. groups themselves are partnerships of individuals.  It is established to carry out certain functions which are best handled by a centralized office - and it usually maintained, supervised, and supported by these groups in their common purpose of carrying the A.A. message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

(from G.S.O. A.A. Guidelines.)

OUR CENTRAL OFFICE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Office has an eleven member Board of Directors.  It is a 3 year service position.  The Officers of the Board serve a one year term.  Board members are elected from the Central Office Delegates each year.  This Board oversees the running of the Office.  The Board members visit the groups, answers questions about the running of the Office.  Each Board members is available to speak at your group or visit your business meeting.  They can be contacted by email to the office which is posted below:
